Default Bye Bye $2,500

I rented a house in Rodanthe Oct 15-29 for the ultimate family fall beach vacation. 4 bedrooms right on the beach! If Rodanthe is still under evacuation then my entire payment is lost. The b.i.t.c.h of it is that I have a lot of family in Salvo, NC whose homes were basically destroyed by Irene. They could use the rental house even if I am not allowed on the island. Rental company says no way.

I know that the folks on the outer banks (including my family) have a lot more to worry about than my silly family vacation, but man - I hope that evacuation order gets lifted soon.

That sucks man.

I had to cancel a vacation about 15 years ago due to some work issues and lost all of my money on it.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya.

You might want to talk to a lawyer. See his opinion , maybe he could send a letter , asking for refund. If you paid by credit card - give the card company a call.

Seems it is not you calling off the trip but area is closed to everyone.

How could that be considered your fault ?

Be like chartering a boat but weather is too rough. Captain will refund 100%.

I'm married, so I have come to accept the fact that everything is my fault.

In all seriousness - I think this is common practice. If the house is destroyed or otherwise uninhabitable then I get a refund, but if the area is evacuated then I loose my $$. I guess I should have ponied up for travel insurance. It just seems unfair that I paid for the house and they wont let my relatives who are allowed to be in Salvo/Rodanthe use the place.

I wonder if they will refund my pet deposit at least, since we didn't have a chance to take our dog in the house.

I'm either dense or in wrong business.

Still makes no sense to me how the rental company can try to keep your money.

Seems like very bad business not to refund your money.

I have a rough idea what a week there costs - we are not talking a few dollars.

Default Hooray!!

I may get to go after all:

Updated Information on the Reopening of N.C. Highway 12

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has announced that N.C. Highway 12 will reopen no later than Tuesday, October 11.

NCDOT has been working since Hurricane Irene to restore the road following damage that compromised portions of Highway 12 north of Rodanthe. The project’s Resident Engineer, Pablo Hernandez, has stated, “Our hope is to open before then, but right now we are confident work will be complete on or before the 11th.” He added, “We will open the road earlier if we can.”

Once Highway 12 is reopened by NCDOT, there will be no travel restrictions for any portion of Hatteras Island, including Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras Village. With the reopening of Highway 12, residents and visitors will be permitted entry to the previously restricted villages of Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo.

It is recommended that visitors contact their accommodations provider to confirm the availability of their lodging reservation.
