This is a good concept but it is hard to tell a male from a female. A male fish full of menhaden will look like a roe laden female. It has been discussed here to throw over 40" fish back but do as you like.........Gary

Someone verify this just to be sure, but a female has two vents on the underneath, whereas the male only has one. I agree with throwing back egg-laden pre-spawn but post-opening day females. The meat isn't worth depleting the resource IMHO. Live line, jig, or troll up some may schoolies for meat instead. Not a sermon, just a thought.

You can't tell by their appearence except that the females are the bigger of the two. They have to be dissected for you to find out.
