Default Apparently I've been Jigging the Wrong way for years..

or have I ???

Question for you all....

I was fishing with two of the very best anglers on TF yesterday. A slack tide ended our fun for an hour or so. I started to "complain" about my right hand hurting for the past 18 months, after a day of jigging. Its not really my hand, but the stretch of skin below my thumb to my wrist. It tends to " rest" on my cork butt. This puzzled both anglers. They asked to show me how I hold my pole. I hold the reel seat between my pointer finger and index finger. Where as they both hold the reel seat between there pinky and ring finger. Quite a difference. The area of my hand resting on cork, doesn;t come into play with them. ( Ya probably have to get a pole out and try my way, and there way, to see what I mean)

So for the afternoon blitz, as awkward as it felt, I started doing it " the right way " It was like changing your golf grip. But I persevered and frankly my hand stopped bothering me.

So now I just have to change things up a bit, but I'm curious to find out how others hold there reel seat.

And for the sake of confusion, I'm speaking about a spinning reel, and not a manly baitcaster.

I use spinning gear to bottom fish / live line.

I hold the reel stem between pinky and ring finger. Between my hand and first knuckle of pinky finger - a thick callous has formed over the years. This acts like a pad.

Seen some guys put tape or a band aid on early morning to avoid getting a sore spot.

If fishing all day - I sometimes move the reel stem to between ring finger and middle finger.

After you learn how to hold your rod right, you then have to know how to hold your mouth right. I put my little finger and ring finger behind the reel steam and all my other fingers go in front of it. I like to have my fingers on the fore grip and thank God I hold the rod in my left hand because if it was my right I'm not sure what I would do being fingerless. Like Skip I do have a callous from holding it this way but it feels right.

By the way, who you thinks going to take it tonight????

I have the delicate hands of an accountant so I just leave the rods in the rod holders. That's what they are for right?

is this a trick question? index and pointer are same thing,..., unless you're one of those guys that point with the middle finger?

Interesting, I don't think I've ever taken notice of how others hold their reels. I hold my spinning reel between the index and middle finger. I've noticed that I sometimes feel pain between my fingers after a long day. I attribute it to the fact that I just don't fish as often as I used to. Makes sense to hold it with a more balanced grip...gonna give it a whirl when I finally get back on the water.

Which makes me wonder if the next thing you'll be asking about is if you've been putting your panties on backwards.
