I started out with the typical pushbutton reel and thought it was great. Now, I wonder how my dad put up with my backwards over-the-head casting, birdnests and general wildness.

I started my daughter with a piece of bamboo stick with a length of cotton string tied to the end when she was very young. I attached a bobber and tied on a hook. She would just set it down in the shallow water next to the community pier with bloodworm and wait for the bobber to get pulled, set the hook and lift the fish out with no reeling or casting. I remember these fishing 'trips' were kept really short to keep her interested.

Not sure anyone was watching the bobber or not, but one time the rod suddenly jumped and pulled down. She was barely able to pull her catch out - an eel caught in less than 2' of water.
