So - When is prime time for Spanish Mackerel around Poplar/E.Bay? Mid August?

I wish I knew. It's been 10 years since I caught any in the bay.

Just outside of Naples, Fl we were catching Ladyfish to use as bait and kept landing Spanish Macs over and over again just by burning a jighead through the water.......not even any kind of soft bait attached.

Big suckers too......like 3,4 and 5 pounders.

Mid to late Aug. This year might be a crap shoot if the salinity is still on the light side by then. Haven't checked on salinity levels but so far this summer has been pretty dry; maybe that will even things out from the wet spring we had. Who knows? Had a blast last year throwing Gotcha plugs into breaking fish and reeling as fast as we could. Much more fun than trolling but whatever it takes to put fish in the boat.

Way more fun indeed!

I still remember the first time I ever got to cast into breaking fish about 11 years ago.....caught a fish on EVERY cast throwing a Sassyshad into the middle of everything. SO much fun.
