I am going through the same drill right now and am also looking at the Galaxy (5225).

Not to hijack your thread, but what is the difference between the XT and XP?

JOC71, The only difference between the two is the connector. The XP has the better connector I am sticking with the XT.

Unless you're going on the high seas where every loss of level could spell doom, you don't really need the XP. What matters most is antenna gain and antenna placement. 3db gain is perfectly fine for most inland waterways (which you get in the shorter antennas). The 8 ft versions offer 6db gain which is more than enough. Obviously for every foot higher you can place your antenna, you increase range. Keep an eye on your radio transmit levels and receiver sets, too. Most transmitters will manually switch between 1w and 25w. Your receiver will likely have a "Local/Distant" setting as well. Make sure it's set to "Distant" unless you're in a busy port like Balto where there's a lot of interference.

I agree, I bought a digital and I have a cheap ole Shakespere right beside it. Both work equally as well. I can't remember exactly but the Digital does come w/a nifty solderless connector which was spiffy. I think I had 2 solder on my shakespeake 1.
