Planer Boards?
 

It'S time to make a new set of boards. My old set served many many hours of duty and in need of retirement.

The Boards Bruce was using on Hook em looked nice and are larger than my current retired set. I think these are the ones built or design by Tawn?

Since I am upping the spread a little and expementing with different setups on the boards, a larger set of boards will help.

Go big or go home.... 48" boards :D

Questions :

Are these Aztec or pine?

Are you guys using 3/8" or 5/8" ss all thread?

I assume your keeping the spacing at 3' because the all thread comes in 6' lengths .

Bruce's boards are awesome. They will pull you overboard if you are not careful. Have a good secure place to anchor them:D

These are the design that Tawn used for his boards. Lolo also built the same set with great results.

My cockpit space is limited, so the smaller set works well for me. As a matter of fact, I bought Lolo's old set before he purchased his 36 footer:) These work well for me, and can be placed on my roof if need be. I run 7 rods off each side:eek:

I have been able to "run" all small 9 inch umbrellas if needed. Of course, a "nasty" day would tax them to their limits, but "normal" days work fine.

If you decide on Bruce's design, you will be very happy.

Thanks Marty. I though Twan was the originator of these. My old set was a 36" 3 board 12" high set made out of the cheep home depot pine. They worked fine. The holes I drilled for mounting the flags were the down fall of the design . They slowly started rotting from that area. It does get crowded in a 25' boat. if I can't carry all of my gear then I will have to get a bigger boat. That's probably what happened to Twan, Bruce and Lolo. :D


Hopefully the will chime in with the materials they used in the build.


Also, a few years ago I flipped a board in rough weather I probably shouldn't have been fishing in. Still a little traumatized, bigger boards may add some extra insurance against that.

I don't wish a board flip on anyone.

I recently built a set of the larger boards and they run great and I used stainless on everything. I was able to get the Aziks at Johnson Lumber in 5/8. They sell in lengths of 18' however can cut it down. I got all my hardware at Bolt Depot.

I'm going to be making another set this weekend, do you want me to pick up the hardware and make them for you. No charge for any labor I would just pass through the cost of the materials to you.

You might think twice before "going big" like Lolo, Bruce, and Tawn. When I say those boards "pull"; I mean they pull hard enough that I would think twice about attaching them to my hardtop (on the 27).
The smaller boards pull just fine for us, and you can pick up a set from Marty's Bait and Tackle in Edgewater. These are "Skip's" board design. They work well. All you have to do is paint them and buy a set of flags.

I run Skip's boards and have for almost 9 years now. They run great with 4-6 lines per side in tandems or solos baits. I have run them on days I was taking waves over the bow out of PLO during the MSSA tournament. You can buy them at All-Tackle and they dont take up too much room in my lil Judge 27.
