Eastern Shore Pond Hopping
So here's the deal. Next week looks like several days in the upper 40's to lower 50's. As of yesterday, the perch weren't biting at Beechwood Park (Magothy) and I am thinking of a trip to the Eastern Shore to do some Crappie and Bass fishing.
I'll open it up to anyone who wants to go. I have a place with several large fishable ponds that can accomodate lots of anglers. Plan to drive your own vechicle (or if only three or four go I can drive). Lots of parking available. I anticipate the day to look like this: 1) 9 am go to Clydes get shiners 2) 10 am leave for the shore 3) 11:30 arrive at a little local store for subs or sandwiches 4) 12 noon walk back to ponds (hunting boots or LL Bean boots are best) 5) 12:30 arrive at ponds and start fishing 6) fish until just before dark 7) get a hamberger for the ride home 8) get home around 7:30 pm (if you drive, you can leave whenever you want) You will need freshwater liscense, bucket or bubbler for shiners, small amount of tackle (small hooks, bobbers, any lures you want-mepps #3 or 4 work great, rod, reel, shoes/boots that can get muddy). We will be walking for about 15-20 minutes to reach the very back ponds, some are closer (5 min walk) if you have kids or can't walk far. We will be in the wild, no bathrooms around. There's enough water/ponds to accomodate as many people as want to come. I'm thinking Wed or Thurs for the trip. Anyone want to go? I haven't fished these ponds for a while, but they have been quite productive in the past. There are enough ponds, that you can jump from one pond to another all day. I like to take a small backpack with dry socks, water bottle and whatever else you want to take. One item I have found invaluable is a small pair of your wife's pruning pliers to cut your way into a sweet looking spot to fish. Take a pair of fishing pliars to get the chain pickeral off the hook as well!!! Lets go:D. 5th (Marty) |
The earliest I could possibly go is Thursday, and I'm definitely good for Friday.
I actually have a few days of good work coming up and boy do I need it! I'd love to go, so of either of those days work, let me know. I LOVE pond fishing.:D |
What day you going?
|
Ok so the long rang forcast shows Thursday to be 51* with only 20% chance of rain. If Scott can make Thursday, lets make it so:D.
The main reason not to make it Friday, is that the PSG flea market is Sat and Sun. Thursday, Thursday, Thursday:eek: 5th |
That sounds like fun Marty but I cant get off work.
Good luck Dan |
I have my schedule cleared for Thursday now (gonna' work through the night on Tuesday and Wednesday ) so I can go.
Mike.....whatdoyathink? Marty...I have a buddy that I fish freshwater with all the time, and I'm pretty sure he could go since he's suckling the state's teat right now too. Cool guy, did his time in the USMC. Would it be ok if I invited him along? If you prefer to limit the people that know about the place I totally understand.:) |
I think I may be able to pull that off....Might not be able to drive, not sure yet....Depends on a lot of things...
I am guessing that USMC is Lance ? I am in as long as I can make it work and I should be able to make that happen.... Sounds like a blast.... Marty, do we have to bring water ? Could we bring other beverages as well ? :) |
You guys can bring anyone you wish. As far as beverages and such, bring whatever you want, just know you will be carrying bait, rods, tackle back to the ponds (15-20 min walk).
There's lots of parking, and as I said a little country store that makes sandwiches or subs. It's so country that normally, if you work in chicken houses, you have to step in a tub of bleach before you go inside:eek:. There are enough ponds that once we leave the truck, we may not see each other until we meet back at the pickup to come home. I generally walk to the back ponds (flipping a mepps along the way) and work my way back to the truck if the back ponds are not producing. If anyone needs a ride, I should have room for one or two. We have enough water for 15-20 anglers:D. Take the kids out of school, keep the women folk home from work, enjoy a day in the outdoors:). 5th (Marty) |
I can't do Thursday, good luck.
|
Phil; sorry you can't make it. I guess you won't see Scott and Mike with their new Alabama rigs:D.
5th (Marty) |
Alabama Rig ?
Is that like an Alabama Slammer ? You mean I have to do something more than put a minnow on a hook under a bobber ? This sounds so complicated, glad I spend most of my time in the salt.... There the only thing I need is a Corona rig...And Scott hooked me up with an automated Corona Rigger last year.... :) |
Nothing beats a shiner under a bobber. That's what I will be doing 95% of the time on Thursday:).

Guy don't forget a pint of chicken livers. This time a year the wisker fish are frisky

My biggest problem is that I'm a pack rat. I can't STAND not having the "perfect" lure with me. And my freshwater bag weighs as much as my 12 year old. Somehow I'll manage though.....it really is a sickness I think. I used to be able to bike the entire C and O Canal and fish along the way for 4 days with a tackle bag that mounted to my handlebars. So maybe there is hope. Oh....my bag actually has wheels on it....:o |
Sounds like a perfect way to carry those "Alabama Slammers" !
:) |
It's still a couple days away; time enough for the weather to change, but it looks like Thursday may be wet. Should we hold Friday in reserve as an alternate day?
Looks like Scott, Mike, and Lance are the only guys from the board going. Are you guys available on Fri as well? 5th (Marty) |

Pretty sure Mike's schedule is clear :D and I think Lance said Friday might be better for him too. I'll make it work. |
OK, Friday it is:D
5th |
Yeah might actually be better for me as well.
|
Woohoo....it's Friday!!!!
Looking forward to sitting in the woods and casting a lot......maybe even catching a few. I need to start packing my stuff up. Been working so much this week that I actually haven't had any time. :( |
Wow; what a beautiful day; and some catching as well. I think the final total was 4 chain pickeral, 4 largemouth bass, and 2 crappie.
Scott (spot77) will post some pics later. I was worried we would be a little early for pond fishing, but we got lucky. Just enough bites to keep it interesting. Sorry more didn't go, but we had five anglers (Myself, Scott, Mike/gailen, Lou, and Lance). I think they liked the looks of the ponds (at least 7 or 8) and we can go back in a few weeks (just before the lilly pads get too prolific) and try again in some warmer water. Now for a good nights sleep and off to the PSG fleamarket. Retired life is great. Now if I can just afford my new boat registration in a few years:eek:. 5th (Marty) |
OOPS; I see mike posted pics under "fishing report" forum:rolleyes:.
My Bad. 5th |
How did I miss this. I feel so out of the loop:( I spent the day laying out my garden and I could have been fishing:mad:
|
Don; sorry you missed it. For me, it was a relaxing day watching a couple minnies under bobbers. For Scott and Mike, they were racing around throwing rattletraps, chatterbaits, topwater stuff, and wherever else they had in their arsinal:D. Hopefully we will go again before the lillypads get up.

And as you saw....I didn't bring even .001% of my "arsenal." :D And that big bag you guys saw was just my freshwater bag. But now, after seing the ponds I know what I want to bring next time. I should be able to get away with that little bag I took Friday. It will just have more stuff in it.:D |
