Wild Pigs
Wow; anyone watching the Discovery Channel and the shows about the wild pig population explosion.
Maybe I should sell my fishing gear and buy a 270 with night scope:D. About 15 yrs ago, I hunted a quail plantation in South Carolina and we saw the destruction they can do to a farmers field in a single night. They did hog hunts as well as quail hunts on the same property. I guess they are expanding at a rate quicker than they can be harvested. 5th (Marty) |
Marty,
I went to SC a few years ago and hunted wild pigs. Some of the pigs are domesticated feral pigs and some were Russian Boars. The hunting was in a marsh next to the Santee River. Our giude showed us where Francis Marion the Swamp Fox ambushed and killed a bunch of British soldiers on the Old Georgetown Rd. This was just a piece of high ground that went through the woods before you got into the open area of the marsh. We killed three pigs, and slowed cooked one for a neighborhood party. It was really good, but you need a Lipitor for dessert. |
The show " The pig bomb" has been aired several times. Not only do the pigs eat a ton but they destroy the land. They are fun to hunt but their population has gotten WAY out of control. They have a big problem with pythons in the south too. Good show.............Gary

There was another show about monster wild pigs.
Some was sorta urban legend but a few were proven to be over 500 lbs. Screw the .270 - grab a .300 magnum for one of those beasts. |
and i was thinking they'd be a lot more fun on light tackle.

Good point...Marty don't you have some nice heavy duty trolling gear that might work on them there peegs ?

Hunted russian boar a few years ago with my brother in north carolina. Fun time on the ground stalking with bows. Meat was delicious...............Mark

If you look at hog hunts, they will have several ways to hunt also; possibly foot hunting, deer stands or blinds, or with dogs, comes to mind. The place I quail hunted was Bullock's Plantation (I think that's how it's spelled). It was a great father/son quail hunting experience with my son and our dog (along with some plantation dogs). My son was about 14 and I wanted to make it a place with lots of birds and shooting opportunities. We had a blast. Good luck 5th (Marty) |

I hate the bastages due to an incident at the age of 10. It was the first time I was allowed to be a solo stander on a dog drive at the hunt club in the SC low country...
I'm feeling 10 feet tall and so proud of myself for being recognized as one of the men - mere boys had to hunt with their Dad or Grandfather. My testosterone levels were so high that morning I thought I could feel short and curlies sprouting. As the morning advanced, I'm thinking Jennifer (the object of my 4th grade affections) would swoon over this momentous occasion and give me some more kisses. I almost had an airburst as the dogs baying grew louder and I heard something busting through the swamp's underbrush. My dreams of pre-pubescent conquest were shattered as the boar burst out of the sawbriars headed straight towards me. I screamed like a little girl, dropped my shotgun and beat feet to a skinny sweet gum tree. I shinnied up a sweet gum tree and clamped down to prevent my fall into certain death . All the tales of hogs ripping open dogs and men spun by the good guys (read comedians) at the hunt club had schooled all of us boys into a healthy respect and fear of the porcine occupants of our swamp. Those tales maintained my now surging adrenaline levels until drivers came up to shoot the boar and allow my safe retreat down the gum tree. I caught massive grief and lost most of my shirt back (dropping your gun and running is much worse than missing) when we all assembled at the shack to prep for the next drive. That little ceremony fires my abhorance of these bastages. I gladly participate in their demise each & every trip home to SC. |

Very funny and entertaining. I took a guy that worked for me on a hog hunt. A hog charged us and I shot him about 20 yards from us. It did shake me up a bit but the hog dropped and I could not find my buddy who WAS right next to me. I looked all around me and then up a tree. There he was and it took him a while to come back down. He picked up his gun and said we will just split this one...........you ready!!............Gary |
